'hohof Mætta 's people,' v. ing . Mætta would be a pet form of an OE  name in Mǣð -. Cf. Matfen (PN NbDu 140), Mattingley (Ha), DBMatingelege , Mettaford, Matcott and Matridge infra 78, 168, 442. There is a high spur of land here running out to the coast. The modern form may be partly due to the influence of the neighbouring Combe Martin supra 36.
