Etymology

This is probably the OE  hop, though it is tempting to derive the name from ON  hóp , 'bay, inlet,' were there other evidence of Scandinavian p.n.'s in the neighbourhood. Hope is a little fishing hamlet and small harbour sheltered by Bolt Head.
