Etymology

The place takes its name from the river on which it is situated (v. supra 8). The family of Trenchard is first mentioned in connexion with the place in 1238 (FF), but a Ricard Trencard occurs in the county as early as c. 1100 (Earle 258). Cf. Coombe Trenchard infra 188.
