Etymology

Blomé (64) interprets this name as OE  lēapa -ford , 'ford marked by leaps,' i.e. baskets or weels for catching fish. Professor Ekwall notes the DB form with s and suggests the pers. name Hlappa . Cf. s. n. Lapland supra 300.
