Etymology

In view of the prominent rounded hill here it may well be that Blomé (39) is right in suggesting a compound of OE  hlanc , 'lank' and ears , 'arse.' For the use of such a word in hill and other names cf. note by Mawer in Brownbill, West Kirby and Hilbre 312–13 s. n. Caldy.
