Studhayes

Early-attested site in the Parish of Kilmington

Historical Forms

  • Stedeheis, Stedehegh 13th Newnham
  • Stedeheis 1246 Oliver
  • Studehays, Studhays 1425 Oliver
  • Stedeheygh 1511 Oliver

Etymology

The forms are difficult to reconcile. The first element may be OE  stēda , 'steed, stallion,' hence 'stallion enclosures,' v. (ge)hæg.Later the name seems to have been altered deliberately to studhays , under the influence of OE  stōd , 'stud,' of allied significance.
