This name, for which a more complete run of forms will be found under Shute infra 417, goes back to OE  scīete , a side form of sceat , for a fuller discussion of which see PN Wo 180s. n. Cockshoot Fm. It may be added that this place like many of the Devon Shutes lies in or near an angle of the parish boundaries.
