Early-attested site in the Parish of Ilsington
Historical Forms
- Idetordoune 1566 DA
- Ittor Doune 1687 Deed
- Idetor 1737 Recov
- Eator Down 1762 Recov
- Itterdown 1789 Recov
Etymology
The modern form is corrupt and must have been influenced by the spellings of Haytor Hundred infra 504. Nothing can be done with the forms as they stand and the etymology is not made easier if we take the eofede tor of BCS 1323 to refer to this tor.
