Etymology

v. worþig . The first element is possibly the British word corresponding to Welsh cnwc , 'hillock,' as suggested by Blomé (39). Cf. Knook PN Wilts 109. The place stands high. Alternatively the first element may be a ME pers. name, cf. John Knoke (1311 Exon).
