Etymology

Names in Hak -, Hack - are fairly common in Devon, v. infra 664. Blomé (9) suggests as first element OE  haca , 'hook, bolt,' used in some topographical sense, cf. le Hake 1553Ct (Clawton). In the present name the word might refer to the hook of land just to the south of the farm. Alternatively the first element may be the pers. name Hac (c )a which occurs twice in the Devon DB (f. 388) as a holder of land TRE.
