Etymology

No certainty is possible. One might suggest that the first element was a river-name Lyde (cf. Lydford infra 191) used here of Pulworthy Water, though there is no parallel for a compound of cot(e) with a river-name. The absence of such a compound may, however, be merely a chance. Alternatively we may have the OE  pers. name Luda with common development of u to i before a dental. Hence 'Luda 's cottage(s).'
