Coxwell

Early-attested site in the Parish of Exbourne

Historical Forms

  • Cokkyswall 1330 SR
  • Cokkeswall 1377 Cl
  • Cokyswill 1461 IpmR

Etymology

This may be 'Cocc 's spring' or 'spring of the (wood)cock,' though as Wallenberg notes (StudNP 2, 98), the wall-forms suggest OE  weall1. In that case the sense is obscure. It has a parallel, possibly more easily explicable, in Coxwall supra 130.
