Etymology

A pers. name *Strecca is not on record in OE  but is found (t. Hy 1) in Wiltshire in the form Strecce (Harl 61 f. 40 b ) and in the Devon pers. name Stretche (1275 RH), cf. also Stretchacott supra 93, Stretchford infra 521, and Stretcholt (So), Stretheholt 1242 Ass, Streccholt 1344 Ipm, and Strecchhull 1306Ass (Devon). In all of these a pers. name is a possibility, but it is clear from Stretch Down infra 396, that strecche could also be used as a topographical term. Doubtless it is the word stretch , 'expanse of territory,' hitherto only recorded from a much later date. v. leah .
