Etymology

The first element may be identical with the word cleaca found in the land-boundaries of a charter relating to Meavy (D), in 1031 (KCD 744). This word, for which Bosworth-Toller gives the meaning of 'steppingstone,' is possibly of Celtic origin and related to the W  cleg , 'hard mass, lump,' clegyr , 'cliff, rock.' There is a small stream here by Clickland farm which might once have been fordable by means of stepping-stones.
