Etymology

The first element is either a Celtic pers. name Guirec , recorded by Loth (Noms des Saints Bretons ), of which the British form would be *Wiroc or it may, as suggested by Professor Ekwall, be a strong variant of the weak English pers. name which seems to lie behind Wrickton (Sa), Wyrketon 1255 RH, Wirketon 1263 Ipm.
