Etymology

This is probably a compound of OE  scir (adj.) and dun.Hence, 'bright hill.' For the initial sk , v. Introd. xxxv. Cf. Burngullow (Co), Brongolou 1296Ass , Bronwolou 1311 AD iv and Bren-golou Chrest 191 with the same meaning (cf. W goleu , 'bright, light').
