Etymology

This is a difficult name. The second element is wic, 'farm,' with the same palatalised development as in Fuge and Fuidge infra 316, 446, and Runnage and Broomage supra 197, 269.Professor Ekwall suggests that the first element may be OE  cealdost , Southern ME  choldest , 'coldest.' It stands on the edge of the Moor, some seven hundred feet up.
