Etymology

The name is probably identical with Sharland (Ha), Schorlynche 1277FF . The first element is the word 'shore' discussed under Shoreham (PN Sx 246), hence 'steep hill.' The place is on a slope above the Clyst river. For initial sc v. Introd. xxxv.
