Etymology

The first element in this name is probably a pers. name, though its date and form are uncertain. Cf. William Chuda in the 1333SR . This may well derive from the OE  cēod (e ), 'bag,' used as a nickname. It is possible, however, that the first element is that word itself, used in some topographical sense. Chudleigh lies on a hill in a hollow. Cf. Addenda, Part i, liv and Part ii, xiv, s. n. Chidham, and Ekwall, Studies 68–9.
