Etymology

v. wielle . For the coalescing of the French definite article with the noun, cf. Lifford PN Wo 355 and Leafield (O), Feld 1226 Sarum, la Feld 1240 Eynsham Cartulary, Felda 1316 FA. It was a manor of the Bishops of Exeter, hence perhaps the curious Anglo-Norman form.
