Etymology

This place-name and Chittlehampton infra 338 are clearly related, but topographically the places are so far apart that there can be no question of any common descriptive element. Rather we must suggest that Chittlehamholt was a forest settlement of the people at Chittlehampton and was called in the first instance cietelhæmaholt , v. Chittlehampton infra 338. It may be added that Chittlehamholt is on a hill and not in a cietel or hollow.
