  • atte Hose 1314 Ass
  • aqua vocata Hosebrok 1345 Ass

Etymology

v. fenn . The first element may be the genitive plural of OE  hōs , 'short tendril,' cf. the pers. name atte Hose (1314Ass ) and aqua vocata Hosebrok (1345Ass ). This latter stream-name is a parallel to Hurstbourne (Ha), Hysseburna (BCS 553) and hyssa pol (BCS 595) from the allied OE  hyse , 'tendril.' Hence, 'marsh of the tendrils,' referring possibly to some marsh-plant.
