Etymology

This place-name clearly contains the OE  pers. name (or nickname) Bicga or Bygga found in the 11th cent, and fully discussed by Stevenson (Crawford Charters 149), or the adjective from which that nickname is derived, if, as seems probable, that name is to be identified with the adjective big , of which the etymology is at present unknown. The same pers. name (or adjective) is found in Bigfrith (Berks), Bigefrithe in 1247 (Ass ), Byggefrith in 1284 (Ass ).
