Etymology

As the farm is close by the parish boundary this may be from OE  hārstān , 'grey stone,' 'boundary stone,' but one would have expected ME  horestone , unless the vowel was early shortened. Alternatively the first element may be hara , 'hare,' but the sense of such a compound is obscure.
