Etymology

For the interpretation of this name v. Bratton Fleming supra 29. Roger de Clavill ' held land in Bratton in 1254 (Cl), and, according to Pole, in 1248 Sir Roger Claville married Joan, daughter of Hamelin de Deaudon, lord of the manor of Bratton.This family-name was later corrupted owing to the influence of the place-name Clovelly supra 70.
