Etymology
Cf. also Culmehill 1520Ct (Luppitt) and the entry “3 lime kilns, 2 Culme pits…” (1797Recov ). The first element is probably identical with culm , 'soot, smut, coal dust, slack' (NED s. v .), 'slack of bituminous coal used for burning lime and for drying malt' (EDD s. v .). The term is on record from Devon and Somerset.
