Etymology

This is probably a compound of OE  brame and ford, hence 'ford by the bramble,' with early dissimilation of mf to nf The manor was held by Richard de Espec c. 1170. In 1242 (Fees) one manor was held by the same family and another by Herbert de Pynu .
