Historical Forms

  • (on) healre dune 739 Crawf 11th
  • Helleredun 1238 Ass
  • Esterhellerdon, Hildredon 1322 Ass
  • Helliton 1809 M

Etymology

For this difficult name Professor Ekwall suggests the possibility of an OE  hēalre , genitive singular of an unrecorded hēalor allied to OE  hēala , 'rupture' and hēalede , 'hydrocelous,' denoting 'a swelling,' 'a hill.' Cf. healre mere BCS 1282. The phonological development is curious but there is little doubt of the identification of forms. There is still an East Hillerton Fm (6″).
