Etymology

Hermer is probably the Continental pers. name Heremar found in England in the form Hermer . Since all the earlier spellings, however, show medial n , it may be that the name contains the OE  pers. name Hereman , the holding of the manor by one Hermer in 1086 being only a coincidence.
