Etymology

The first element is clearly a pers. name but its form is doubtful. The first two forms suggest an unrecorded Æþel -lāf and the form Alenesford can best be taken as for Alevesford from the same name. Other forms point to Æþelheard . Possibly the ford was at different times in its history associated with different persons.
