Etymology

Probably 'Hnotta 's hill,' v. dun . Cf. Natsley supra 58, Hnottan ford (BCS 1217) and on hnottan mære (BCS 491), also Wymond Notte (1319 Exon). Notter Tor in Linkinhorne (Co), Nottetorre t. Hy 1 (1378) Pat, suggests, however, that we may have in some cases a descriptive element such as OE  hnott , 'bare,' etc., used in some topographical sense. Cf. also Nattonhole infra 433.
