Etymology

This is a difficult name. We may perhaps suggest an unrecorded OE  pers. name Huhha or Huga , hence 'Huhha 's or Huga 's farm.' The other possibility is that we have ME  Hughe , Huwe (cf. Hoo Meavy supra 230), a pers. name which appears in 1333 (SR ) as Hugha . This would suit Hewton supra 207 and Howton in Moretonhampstead infra 485 better, where we have no forms with -inton or with gg . Houghton in High Week does show forms with double g .
