Langley Barton

Early-attested site in the Parish of Atherington

Historical Forms

  • Langelegh 1303 FA 1333 SR 1414 Exon

Etymology

It was also known as Western Langeleye next Womberleghe (FF) and is no doubt identical with the DB manor of Bichenel (e )ia .v. leah . It is of interest to note that, according to DB, Bicheneleia had been added to the manor of (High) Bickington infra 358.There can be little doubt that they contain the same pers. name and refer to the same man. Bickingleigh was probably additional woodland assigned to the manor.
