Wadland Barton

Early-attested site in the Parish of Ashbury

Historical Forms

  • Wadeland 1244 Ass
  • Wadelond(e) 1270,1288 Ass

Etymology

Cf. Wadland in Liskeard (Co), Wadelond 1333FF , and Wadfast in Whitstone (Co), Wadefeste DB, Wadefast 1303, Wadvast 1346 FA. As all these three places are by streams the first element may be OE  wæd, 'ford.' In the case of the first two, OE  wad, 'woad,' is also possible though the persistent medial e suggests that in the Devon name at any rate we may have the pers. name Wada .
