Etymology

The same name occurs infra 60, 332, and we find the pers. name atte Hocumbe in Cheriton Fitzpayne in 1333 (SR ). This suggests a compound of OE  hoc and cumb denoting a valley which had a definite twist in it, or into which projected a hook-shaped promontory of land .
