Etymology

Miller's Dale, Milndale 1630Plan , Mil (l )hous (e )dale 1633 DbA vi, 1650 DbA xxxix, Millers-dale 1767 Burdett, Milnhouse or Miller 's Dale 1840 O, being named from Tiddeswal Mylnehowse 1438, 1442WollCh , Worm-hille Millehowses c. 1460 WWorc, Milnehouses Eliz ChancPet passim , v. myln , hūs , dæl 1 . It is impossible to be sure whether it was named from the mill of Tideswell or Wormhill as it is later variously described as being in both parishes. Cf. molendini de Wermenhill 1205 P et passim , le Milnstede 1252 DbA v (v. myln , stede ) and molendino de Ponte Ed 2BelCh in Tideswell. For the development cf. Millers Green infra 414.
