Ankerbold, Ankerbould 1657 ParReg North Wingfield, Ankerbold 1687Portland , 'hermit's dwelling', v. ancra , boðl . It is earlier Braylesford juxta Tupton 1356WollCh , little Breillesford 1532Woll , named from the de Braylesford family, which held land there (1356WollCh ). The modern name may well be simply an antiquarian invention.
