Etymology

Castle Hill, le Castell Hyll 1468Portland , cf. Tapton Castle 1502ShefJC , 1563Survey , Topton cast. 1577 Saxton, 1610 Speed and Castulfurlong 1339 DbCh. It has from time to time been considered to be the Roman camp which gave its name to Chesterfield, but apparently with little justification. It would appear to be an artificial elevation, said to be a simple earthwork of the moated mount type (VCH i, 375). v. castel(l), hyll .
