Etymology

Swarkeston Bridge, ponte de Cordy 1204 ChR, bridge of Cordy 1229 Ch, pontem de Swerkiston '1275, 1276 RH, pontem de Cordy 1330Ass , Swerkestonbrugge 1355 Pat, Swarston Brugge 1483 RadCh.For further forms v. Stanton by Bridge supra . This is the name not only of the bridge across the R. Trent but also of the whole of the raised causeway between Stanton and the river. The modern name is from Swarkeston infra 664 and the earlier name is probably taken from the family of Henry Cordy 13th Darley.
