Hopping Hill, cf. le Hoppingclif 1334DuLa , Hoppynges , Hoppyngmylne 1415DuLaMB , 1417, 1482MinAcct , Hoppyngmylle 1508DuLaMB , Hoppyng Mill 1554 Lanc, Hoppinges felde 1574DuLa , Hoppinges Hamlet 1600 Lanc with numerous subsequent references to the mill, Hopping Mill 1660 ParReg Duffield. This is presumably 'place where hops grew', v. hopping . There are several place- and field-names elsewhere in the county of this type.
