Historical Forms

  • le Badgers Ealde 1596 DuLa

Etymology

Badgerholes (6″), Baggerheld 1415DuLaMB , le Badgers Ealde 1596DuLa , Badger hold 1618DuLaMB , perhaps 'hawker's slope', v. baggere , helde . The development of the second element to hol 1 has no doubt been occasioned by confusion of the first element with the animal-name badger , which is first evidenced in 1523 (NED).
