Etymology

'Farm near marshy ground or between rivers', v. ēg , tūn . The village is situated on Bottle Brook, close to its confluence with the R. Derwent, where the latter has developed a large meander. Levées have been constructed to prevent flooding. Cf. Long Eaton infra 458.
