Etymology

'Farm of the Irishman or Irishmen', v. Íri , tūn . The first element is the gen.sg. or pl. of ON  Ífri, used of a Scandinavian who had been in Ireland or of an Irishman accompanying the Vikings to England.v. kirkja . The occasional forms in Churche , v. cirice , are noteworthy.Cf. Ireton Fm infra 508.
