Etymology

'Valley', v. hop 1 , probably used in the sense of dial. hope 'a smaller valley branching out of the main valley'. The village itself is situated in the valley of the R. Noe, near its confluence with Peakshole Water, which flows through the main valley, now called Hope Valley.
