Etymology

Derwentdale, Derwentdale 1379 Gaunt, 1473WollCh , Darwent Dale 1670 ParReg Hathersage, Darrent Dalle in Hathersage 1724Bemrose .'Valley of the Derwent', v. dæl 1 and R. Derwent supra 5. It was formerly used to describe a greater part of the valley than at present, as is proved by the 1724 form, whilst that for 1473 refers to land in Beeley.
