Etymology

Fanshaw Gate, le Faunchallegatehede 1456WollCh , Fawnchallegate 1472 ib, Fawnchall gate 1494 DbA xx, Fanshaw Yate 1576 ib. It is impossible to be certain whether Gate is geat 'gate or gata 'road', the spelling Yate indicating the former, the 1456 form perhaps the latter. It is named from the Faunchall , Fanshaw family, cf. John Faunchall 1431WollCh .
