Etymology

Probably 'Heorot's hill', v.ing 4 , dūn . The suggestion that the first el. is heorot 'hart, stag' is improbable grammatically; the persistent medial -en - and -ing - is most unlikely as a non-etymological intrusion. For the later confusion of dūn and tūn , cf. Cronkston Grange infra 365. For Cotes , cf. Cotesfield infra 365.
