Etymology

Watford Fm (6″), Quatford 1101–8 RegLich, a. 1108 Dugd, Wadford Hy 3For (p), cf. Qua. fordbroke 1330Ass , Watfordlowe brooke 1533Bateman , the Whotfordlowe 1640DuLaSC (v. hlāw , brōc ). It is unlikely that this is of the same origin as Quatford Sa, itself a difficult name. Probably the Qu - spellings are simply northern forms for ME  Wh -, and Watford is simply 'wheat ford' (that is, 'ford used during the carrying of the wheat-crop'), v. hwǣte , ford , with early shortening of the first element.
