Etymology

High Wheeldon, Wldon 1251 Ch, Wildon 1251 ChR, Hy 3For (p), Welleton 1287 FF, 1306 Abbr, Qweldon 1415DuLaMB , Weldon 1531 Lanc, Wheldon 1555, 1584 ib, Wheeldon 1594 ib, Whildon Hill 1599 ib, High Whildon 1614Plan . Apparently 'wheel hill', v. hwēol , dūn .This can hardly have reference to its shape since viewed from the north it is a sharply pointed conical hill. It may however refer to a stone circle though none has so far been discovered there. Perhaps 'hill with a stone circle', or even 'with a wheel (or mill)'. Cf. Whillimoor Foot (PN Cu 336).
