Etymology

Probably 'Glappa's stream or spring', v. wælla ; a small stream rises just beside the village. For OE  pers.n. Glappa , which apparently belongs to the early days of the Anglian settlement, and for confusion between initial G - and C - cf. Glaphowe (PN NRY 145), Glapthorn (PN Nth 203) and Glapton (PN Nt 246). A first element glæppa 'buck-bean' is possible but seems less likely with wælla .
